good eats...and some napping advice

So I'm a day late with this posting BUT in my defense it WAS president's day yesterday AND my husband and I got to go on a date. Yeah we were THAT excited about President's day. just kidding. You see date night doesn't happen much around here. I can literally count on one hand the number of dates we've been on since C was born. We swore up and down that we'd go on one date a week. Well... that hasn't happened. It will eventually. I hope.  ANYWAYS we got to head to Lawrence for some Big 12 basketball. KU v OSU. We were the couple divided. I knew it wasn't going to be good for the pokes, but it was still fun to get some game gear on, head to lawrence with mat and pretend like we were in college...burgers, beer & all. In the words of two fellow poke fans next to me, "this place {allen field house} is ridiculous...they're herding us around like a bunch of chickens {in trying to find their seats}...they would  never squeeze us in like this in Gallagher Iba" Ha! Loved it. (And yes I do love allen field house, but not like I love Gallagher Iba.)

Anyways, the pokes lost, but it brought 4 years of memories of being season ticket holders.
Oh, and I still miss Eddie.
Remind me to tell you the story of when I met Eddie. In Allen Field house. true story.

On to the menu!

Sunday: blue cheese hamburgers, roasted veggies (squash, mushrooms, zucchini, red peppers)
Jami's chocolate chip cookie pie. OMG.
Monday: date night! I may or may not have had another cheeseburger. yum.
Tuesday: White pizza with tomatoes and basil, asparagus, Caesar salad
Wednesday: Chicken Piccata with Carissa's green beans
Thursday: flank steak with avocado/corn salsa  & grilled tortillas
(I don't really know the recipe...Mat makes it and it is AWESOME)

Can I just say a few words about Jami's chocolate chip cookie pie. Seriously amazing. unreal. I've been fantasizing, dreaming, lusting excited to make it since she posted it last week. Do your self a favor. Make it tonight. Run a few extra miles if you need to. Your family will be singing your praises. In the words of my husband, "that Jami sure does have some amazing dessert recipes for a skinny girl!"

And my nap questions:
Okay my child aka the "nap striker" ...who has NEVER been a good napper (hence the name) has recently dropped her 3rd nap of the day. We are on week two of this. My hope was that one of her naps would get longer. well no. Instead of two 45 minute naps a day, we are currently averaging two 30 minute naps.

How can I make her take longer naps? Any thoughts out there?

This same child...aka the nap striker.... does a really good job of sleeping at night. She goes down between 6:30 & 7:00 (when she is tired...not by the clock) and sleeps straight through until 4:30-5:00... when she is wide awake. I've tried ignoring (she will cry until 6), I've tried feeding, I've tried soothing... none of it works. She's basically awake the rest of the morning...until her morning nap. Shouldn't she be sleeping longer than 10 hours at 8 months? Especially with such short naps during the day? My goal is that she sleeps until 6. I'm not just shooting in the wind, I'm basing this off of healthy sleep habits/healthy child.

Any thoughts?

So 1) how do I get longer naps 2) how can I get her to sleep a little longer in the morning?

If this is perfectly healthy, that's totally fine. I've learned how to get things done around the house with her "help" or crazy fast during her short naps... but I just feel like she needs more sleep.

  1. Hey Bethany! Sorry about the nap woes. I understand somewhat because Addy is a very light napper. However, she does sleep longer through the night (11 hrs or more). I am thankful for that at least and would go nuts otherwise =)

YES, I certainly think babies and even toddlers need more sleep than what you described. I think my pediatrician told me 14 hours is still ideal for Addy's age, which is 2. Are you sticking to a good routine at night? (Bath, reading, music, nursing)? I guess I would try to keep her up a little later like maybe 7:30 or later and see if she sleeps longer during the night. Just keep trying with those naps! Some babies do take shorter naps than others. At some point she will hopefully transition soon to one and only one longer nap during the day. I am lucky if I get more than an hour or hour and a half from Addy during her one nap of the day. I don't know much, but I do believe that babies and children need naps and rest time during the day. They may fight it, but it's up to us moms to make sure they get it! Hope you all are doing well. Your photography is looking awesome by the way!!!!

  2. Pierson's always gone to bed at 7:30 and it's worked for us...his sleeping, I'm quickly finding out is a dream (pun intended). Around C's age, he was taking 2 great solid naps...but it wasn't always easy, either. It's frustrating to get to that point. BUT NOW #2 is waking every 45 minutes. Babywise calls it the 45 minute intruder, but I can't get him to sleep longer no matter what I try--sleep it out, refeed, etc. I'm getting frustrated...so, no advice here other than, I here ya, sistah! And I'm sorry!

  3. My kiddo also enjoys the short nap. For months, she would somehow get by on two naps lasting about 35-45 minutes each. Everyone told me that as she got older, the naps would lengthen out gradually. And they were right. She is almost a year old, and her morning nap is about 45 minutes still, but her afternoon nap is about an hour to an hour and a half. She can't stay up past about 6:30pm at night without going bonkers, and, after about two or three weeks of her waking up at 5am and us letting her just have to cry about it a bit, she got the memo and now sleeps till about 7am. Those were a brutal few weeks, but they finally paid off. That's about all I've got. Good luck and be patient!! (Don't you hate hearing that....?!) ;)

  4. Oh Bethany...I hate it for you that she's not sleeping much. I have been a nap nazi, probably to a fault, since the beginning. But they do what they want and every baby is different. I agree with Maren...45 minute intruder is real and REALLY rude. I still battle it but I let them cry it out. Some may not agree with that, but I say if they are fed, dry and safe then they can stay in their crib during the naptime that I set. Chose to sleep, play or cry it's up to you. I monitor them the whole time to make sure nothing else is the problem. They started waking around 7 months after 45 mins and I made the mistake of getting them up...took weeks to undo that. not fun. now they stay put...babies are smart and play on our weaknesses, I am sure of that!!! Does she go to sleep on her own, or does she need to be rocked or soothed? Are you on a schedule or baby led? I schedule, also to a fault I'm sure, but it works for us. ((hugs)) to you!! I am sure that doesn't help you a bit, but from what I have read and experienced is that "sleep begets sleep". The better they nap the longer they sleep at night. I hope she can stretch those naps and morning wake time out for you!!!

  5. Hi Bethany! the napping thing can be so hard. Doesn't health sleep habits say to let them lay in there and cry for up to an hour and then you can go in and get them? I would try that. Also, i've found William does better if he goes to bed at 6:30. The earlier bed time worked wonders for us. If he stays up past that he doesn't sleep as well and doesn't nap as well either.

45 minute naps suck! so sorry!! Have you tried the schedule in the book...

    6:30 bedtime
    6-7 am wake up
    9:00 am first nap
    1:00 pm second nap

she may only need two naps now...

when william wakes up at like 5:30 i always go in there and nurse him and put him back in his crib and he goes back to sleep until 7. He acts like he wants to be awake for the day sometimes at 5:30 but i don't let him:)

    hope this helps!
    hang in there!!

  7. i have made the choco chip cookie pie like 2 times this last week. it was amazing yet shocking that we could eat so much of it!

and mmm, naps. sometimes it takes a couple weeks to adjust to the nap drop. you could try just one nap. she might just be advanced...

  9. Here's my advice...call your bf for a super long chat and guess what, she will take and hour and a half long nap so that you can have your third cup of coffee for that day and be SUPER productive! Maybe we should plan a marathon chat for tomorrow too???
